In 1967 I was 15 years old I might have made a gung ho soldier then except something about the war was pointed out by a teacher I had a Mr Peach. He really did influence us in school as to the follies of war and Vietnam was full blown in our faces every day on the news. By 16 I was going to anti war demonstrations in Miami. We were listening to veterans coming back from the war and their anti war views.From the frontlines you shared great closeness with your brothers in arms. I feel I missed out on that big time. My pops had lived it, uncles, bro in law, cousins and more. When I registered for the draft in 1970 in Oakland , Ca I saw all the draftees showing up , getting their hair cuts and knowing they were headed for Vietnam. Right there and then I asked for a CO form , I filled it out hand scribbled all about how I thought it was an unjust war, a war of big business, a war that we had no right to wage. It was a bit of a mess, I turned it in. I never did come close to the lottery number so I will never know what might have happen if I had been called up. So I can only live the war through others and wonder , how would I have coped.

The personal recollections of the author's experiences as a marine in Vietnam and his participation in the effort to have the the sacrifices of the Fallen recognized. This is not a somber sad collection of stories but has it's poignant moments. Easy to read but thoughtful.
David DeChant has related a fantastic narrative, and I salute him for all he went through in Vietnam. In reading the book, I felt like I was at his side.
Dave DeChant admirably served his country,The Fallen and their survivors in a number of capacities both during and after the Vietnam War. This book chronicles the many moments of extreme challenge and heartwarming success along those paths. Dave's long involvement with and continuing commitment to veterans advocacy serves as a moral guide in what he refers to as his healing process from survivor guilt.
This is an emotional and real world book of the intensity, pain, suffering that occurs within all warriors. It presents a first person story of a Marine, Father, Friend and Caregiver dedicated to the veterans whom have served in all wars. While it starts in Vietnam it ends today with the day to day struggles of an aging yet timeless warrior. He writes in a clear, concise manner bringing to bear the issues and challenges all veterans face now and forever. This is a book that will be understood and welcomed by anyone who has lived thru the soul defining state of war bringing to bear it worse nightmares yet its closest bonds of brotherhood with other warrior. It remains always faithful to the veteran and their families.
Inspiring and emotional memoir from a Marine Vietnam Vet working in Military Intelligence. His gratitude for his life, pain at the loss of others , inspired him to work tirelessly for wounded warriors, donating proceeds from this book. David was also associated with and instrumental in the Vietnam Memorial. How he explains the meaning of its design is extraordinarily meaningful. It is heartbreaking to recognize the trauma Vietnam Vets endured in country and upon their return. This Nation owes them all the resources available.
